Behind the Scenes of Peanut Celebration

Valleyfair

Valleyfair is the Upper Midwest's largest amusement park, offering endless fun and thrills with world-class rides, attractions and live entertainment.

Peanuts Celebration is an event, unlike anything Valleyfair has ever done before! Uniquely dedicated to celebrating the beloved Peanuts characters, we invite guests to step inside the pages of a Charles M. Schulz comic strip as the characters take over the theme park for the very first time. Every weekend in June, we will have extra special events, games, shows, and activities for you to enjoy.

Throughout the park, hints of the upcoming event can already be seen, with new decorations popping up each day. We wanted to give you the behind-the-scenes look at Valleyfair’s creative process and how the event has come together so far. We talked with Keith Kartz, Valleyfair's Coordinator of Visual Display, to get his perspective on the upcoming event.

To put Peanuts Celebration together, we have created and designed over 1,000 new pieces that have been placed throughout the park. These new pieces include huge cut-out sculptures of the Peanuts characters. Keith told us the idea for the large cutout Peanuts characters came to me around two years ago on a business trip to Nevada. "I immediately jumped on the idea and had them created. It took nearly 6 months to make them but they turned out even better than anticipated," Keith said. Make sure to keep an eye out for these fun park decorations when visiting for Peanuts Celebration!

We went on to ask Keith about the logistics of the decorations and design work that goes into the Peanuts Celebration displays. Surprisingly, he told us the hardest part of it all was planning, meetings and getting everyone on the same page. "Although the design plays a huge role, creating a cohesive plan for the event has to be the most time-consuming part," Keith said, "It has been fun working alongside my colleagues though, Valleyfair is such a fun company to work for.”

As we close in on the opening weekend, things have been hectic in preparation for the event’s debut. “In the next couple of days, we will be focusing on setting up the big displays in the park. We are looking forward to the Snoopy and Charlie Brown topiaries, but the thing I am most excited to construct is the giant, bright yellow Charlie Brown balloons that will be suspended 75 ft. in the air over the park," Keith said.

Keith told us that he wanted to focus on his favorite Peanuts Characters when designing and thinking up ideas. “My favorites are Snoopy, Woodstock, Charlie, Linus, and Lucy," Keith said. Charlie Brown has been a huge inspiration for the event, and aspects of his character can be seen in many decorations around the park, from the iconic yellow and black zig-zag pattern on flags and banners to the balloon display that will soon hang in the sky above the park.

Keith says, “When creating event displays, I kept them [Peanuts characters] in mind, but I wanted Valleyfair to be authentic and unique. I tried to put a modern twist on the Peanuts gang while giving it a quirky Minnesota look.” Since Valleyfair is already extremely focused on landscaping, it was easy to tie some Minnesota inspiration into the creations.

These are just the beginnings of the event’s decorations; there is so much more that Valleyfair has in store. We have many fun opportunities for the entire family at Peanuts Celebration! Along with with with the displays and decorations, we also have met and greets with characters, Pig-Pen’s petting zoo, Woodstock Musical Festival, Cowboy Jamboree, Peanuts Sketch School, Peanuts-themed foods and so much more. We are so excited to see everything come together starting this Saturday, June 8. We can’t wait to see you all there, you’re not going to want to miss this one-of-a-kind event!
