Valleyfair's NEW Spam on a Stick Recipe


Valleyfair is the Upper Midwest's largest amusement park, offering endless fun and thrills with world-class rides, attractions and live entertainment.

It is a fun but strange tradition in Minnesota to put any food possible on a stick, and then deep fry it. At Valleyfair, we already have a few favorite items on a stick: deep-fried pickles, regular pickles, the infamous Pronto Pup, bacon, shrimp, and veggies. In 2020, we are adding a new item to our on-a-stick line up, a Minnesota delicacy - spam.

For all you non-Minnesotans, let us assure you this new menu item is as delicious as it is non-nutritious. Spam is canned cooked pork invented by Hormel Foods Corporation right here in Minnesota. It was first produced in 1937 and gained notoriety worldwide after its use during World War II.

Since the park is not yet open for you to try this awesome new dish, we are giving you an exclusive look at the recipe along with tips and tricks on how to make Spam on a Stick at home.

Prep Time: 10 minutes 
Cook Time: 15 minutes

  •  1 cup - Cornmeal 
  •  1 cup - All-purpose Flour
  •  1/4 teaspoon - salt
  •  1/8 teaspoon - pepper
  •  1/4 cup - granulated sugar 
  •  1 - Egg
  •  1 cup - Milk
  •  1 quart - Vegetable oil
  •  2 cans - Minnesota Made SPAM
  •  8 - Wood skewers 


 1) In a medium bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, sugar, and baking powder. Wisk in eggs and milk.
 2) Slice each can of SPAM into four equal slices. Insert wooden skewers. 


 3) Preheat oil to 350° in a deep saucepan over medium heat.
 4) Roll skewers in batter until well-coated. 
 5) Fry each skewer until golden brown, about 3 minutes, remove and place on a paper towel to drain oil. 

 6) Top with favorite condiments and enjoy a Minnesota tradition!
