Working from Home: Valleyfair Edition

Kelsey Bailey

Kelsey joined the Valleyfair team in 2017 as PR and Communications Manager. She enjoys eating endless funnel cakes, riding Renegade multiple times a day, and telling all the wonderful stories about the inner workings of Valleyfair. Twitter: @kelseymegard.

Working from home has been a strange change for many, I am sure. It has been quite a change for me, as well. I now consider myself a Zoom, LifeSize, and Teams expert, platforms I had little experience working with before COVID-19. All these changes had me asking myself, how is everyone else dealing with working from home? I reached out to my colleagues and compiled their responses for your viewing pleasure. I am proud to present the Valleyfair team, working from home edition.

Kelsey Bailey, Communications Manager

Where is your home office?

I had to get creative in building my "home office." I started at the kitchen table for a few weeks, but because of multiple distractions, I set myself up on a small camping table in a spare bedroom, which has been working great.

What have you been binging, and why should we watch too?

Like so many others, I caved to the pressure of watching Tiger King, and I must say it was worth it. That show portrays some of the most exciting people I have ever seen in my life. I also started watching Run on HBO, which is an excellent show if you are looking for drama and a laugh.

How is your day different now that you're working from home?

I think it is safe to say that I am a people person, so instead of popping into my coworker's offices to catch up, I will pop up on their screen for a Teams call for a quick chat.

What's particularly challenging about working from home?

I miss seeing all of my coworkers every day. I also miss the energy of the park.

What do you really like about it?

It is stereotypical of working from home, but I do enjoy not having to dress up every day.

What's something fun you've gotten to do while you're home more than usual?

I've been practicing piano more frequently, which has been an excellent outlet for releasing some of my energy.

What is the first thing you'll do when we get back to the park?

I am long overdue for a ride on Renegade. Yeehaw!

What's the first thing you'll do when life gets back to normal?

I have a long list of concerts that I want to attend, and I will go to the first one that is touring!

Rachel Wingard, Youth Events Account Executive

Where is your home office?

My home office just so happens to be in the corner of my bedroom, living room, and kitchen. The joys of living in a studio apartment.

What have you been binging, and why should we watch too?

Though not binging, I've slowly been watching Ragnarok, a Norwegian-language show that's inspired by Norse mythology. I'm only a few episodes in but it definitely falls into the category of "angsty teen drama".

How is your day different now that you're working from home?

I'm definitely eating more and talking less.

What's particularly challenging about working from home?

It's hard not seeing my coworkers every day. I miss being able to walk into their office and take a mental break for a bit. Video calls don't quite cut it for me.

What do you really like about it?

I've never been the type to wake up early enough to enjoy breakfast before work—I've always been running out the door while chowing down on a bagel. But now I start every morning by making a big breakfast before sitting down in front of my computer with a cup of coffee.

What's something fun you've gotten to do while you're home more than usual?

I've been practicing yoga in the middle of my days. It's a great break that helps me refocus and gets my body moving a little.

What is the first thing you'll do when we get back to the park?

A long overdue morning stretch session with my team followed by a walk around the park.

What's the first thing you'll do when life gets back to normal?

Hug my family and friends.

Andy Bursey, Operations Manager

Where is your home office?

In my basement

What have you been binging, and why should we watch too?

I have been watching a lot of movies. I discovered an app called Letterboxd that tracks the movies you have seen so I've been trying to get my count up. Currently, at over 1,170 movies so far in my life. Favorite movie I have watched recently is Molly's Game (on Netflix).

How is your day different now that you're working from home?

My days consist of a lot more video calls.

What's particularly challenging about working from home?

Sometimes directions can't get lost in text, so not being able to have the face to face interaction can become difficult.

What do you really like about it?

I live for an hour from Valleyfair so working from home has saved me a lot of time. It is nice to have my commute be 30 steps.

What's something fun you've gotten to do while you're home more than usual?

Been spending a lot more time with my family than I typically would be this time of the year.

What is the first thing you'll do when we get back to the park?

Do a round in the park to see the whole park.

What's the first thing you'll do when life gets back to normal?

Get a haircut!

Jeremiah Meyer, Accounting Manager

Where is your home office?

For the first month, I sat on the floor next to my coffee table. But I finally ordered a small dining room table and chairs on Amazon that works a little better as an office space.

What have you been binging, and why should we watch too?

I had watched the Supernatural series in the past, but at some point, I dropped off and didn't finish it. So I started over again at episode 1 and just finished season 14 this past weekend. Almost 300 episodes! The final season isn't on Netflix yet, so I'll have to wait for that.

How is your day different now that you're working from home?

I always thought it would be exciting to work from home, but I definitely miss going to the office each day and seeing everyone.

What's particularly challenging about working from home?

As an accountant, I really miss my desk calculator. I should have brought that puppy home with me because I am so overusing the calculator on my phone.

What do you really like about it?

I enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out how to get things done from home. We have a lot of resources available to us at the office that makes our day-to-day lives so much easier, but now we're being challenged to find new ways to complete tasks.

What's something fun you've gotten to do while you're home more than usual?

I've started reading more than I had in the past few years. I actually joined a book club with some friends from college, and we read a new book every two weeks and then meet on a Zoom call to discuss the book. There are about a dozen people on the call, and they are spread all over the place, which makes it really interesting. Washington, California, Colorado, Tennessee, Arizona, and Spain!

What is the first thing you'll do when we get back to the park?

I'm very excited to see all of my coworkers face-to-face. (While maintaining social distance)

What's the first thing you'll do when life gets back to normal?

I visited the Wooden Hill Brewery taproom for the first time back in February, and I have not been able to stop thinking about it ever since! Everything from the beer to the food to the atmosphere was just incredible.
